Heart of Dinner Meal Delivery

Weekly since Oct 2021

Thanks to the generous donation of Heart of Dinner, UMAAA helped distribute meals to home bound seniors. Our meals are assembled in La Marqueta thanks to their provision of free space. See a video here.

With our city and community partners, UMAAA hosted a grab-n-go event featuring a lion dance, takeout lunch and health resources.

Public Safety and Hate Crimes seminar

October 2022

Chief of Hate Crimes Unit at the Manhattan District Attorney Office, Hannah Yu, discussed public safety and Anti-Asian hate crimes with our seniors, describing the criminal justice system and how to report crimes. Translation in Cantonese and Mandarin was provided.

Health Seminar on Memory Loss Prevention

September 2022

Dr. Pauline Lau educated our seniors on the importance of staying active to stave off cognitive decline, leading us all to dance the macarena.  Partners from the East Harlem Neighborhood Health Action Center, AAFE and Columbia University Community Affairs provided space and refreshments.

AAPI History Curriculum Block Party

June 2022

With the Harlem-based nonprofit Marcus Meets Malcolm, we celebrated the mandated inclusion of AAPI history in NYC schools. This epic family-friendly event featured performances from a hula dancer, Chinese dance troupe and 9-man volleyball team. We learned to play Go, hula dance, fold origami and make dumplings.  Senators Cordell Cleare and John Liu joined the fun.

Voter Outreach and Registration

May 2022

UMAAA and AALDEF hosted a voter registration event in an East Harlem senior center.  We stressed the importance of choosing a party and voting in primaries in New York.

Health Webinar on Diabetes Prevention

UMAAA helped coordinate a first webinar in Chinese for our Asian seniors! They really enjoyed this special attention. Many thanks to the excellent presentation for doctors at CAIPA and the forever helpful East Harlem Neighborhood Health Action Center.

Asian-owned Businesses Outreach

March 2022

UMAAA joined Uptown Grand Central and the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce to speak to Harlem businesses that are owned by Asians and to provide them with valuable resources to grow their business

Harlem Lunar New Year Block Party

February 2022

UMAAA partnered with a local non-profit Marcus Meets Malcolm to hold a Lunar New Year celebration on an open street. It was epic! See a video of the event here

Vigil in Memory of Yao Pan Ma

January 2022

UMAAA held a vigil for Mr. Yao Pan Ma who passed away after being viciously attacked on 125th Street. We are grateful for the attendance of elected officials from and outside of Harlem. See a video of the event here.

Moon Festival Celebration

Sept 2021

We enjoyed tea time with 30+ Asian seniors sharing some of our favorite snacks gathered from Chinatown, such s moon cake and egg roll. Thank you La Marqueta for providing the venue

Anti-Asian Hate Canvas Event

July 2021

UMAAA helped coordinate a canvas event for New York City's Commission of Human Rights where we put up Anti-Asian Hate posters on Harlem's store fronts to raise awareness. We appreciate the participation of our seniors.
